Are some students born intelligent ?
And if yes…How should others
compete with them…. A billion dollar question ?
It’s very common in schools or colleges that few students ( so called intelligent students ) always fare better in studies than others. Some students ( let’s call them as ordinary students ) despite working hard fail to achieve the grades what these so called intelligent students seems to achieve so easily. This frustrate these ordinary students and they give up their struggle by convincing themselves that they were not born smart or intelligent. They may also develop inferiority complex which may further worsen the situation.
This raises few questions
1 Are few students are born intelligent ?
2 Are these so called intelligent students not having to work or study ?
How can others compete with them ?
Let us look into the answers for above questions as explained by experts.
1. Yes. Some people are born intelligent. From what I have read on the subject ,IQ is about 50% genetics and about 50% environment. If you have intelligent parents you are more likely to be smart (physical make up of the brain, or genes ) and if you come from an environment where you get good nutrition and are intellectually stimulated (Mom or Dad read to you at night instead of just arguing among themselves or watching TV ) you will have a higher IQ. Your environment can influence your I.Q. up to 30 or 40 points, depending on how much stimulation and attention you receive, and how the people around you act. Someone who grows up in a family where dinner table conversation is about economics and political theory is going to be more intellectually stimulated than someone who grows up in a house where dinner conversation is about TV Serials. Also If your father or mother loves books or an avid reader, chances are there that you grow up loving books and imbibe reading habits from them which may help you to concentrate while studying. That also stimulates your memory power. Also if your parents are graduates in the discipline in which you are studying you may clarify the doubts / absorb the fundamentals quite easily and that make you an intelligent student.
Then what is memory power ? Does some people has more memory power ( Because your intelligence is closely related to your so called memory power ) ? .
According to scientists memory and memory power are two different things. Memory is the ability to store the information ( say data ). Memory power is the ability to recall that information at a required time. That makes all the difference between an intelligent student and a dull student.
As per scientist every human brain has almost equal number of memory cells which can store billions of terabytes of information ( if you measure it using this computer terminology ). That means everyone is born with same amount of memory. And as per scientist our brain has the capacity to record / store each and every minute event in our life, each and every scene we see during our life time and each and every line we read (But most of this information cannot be recalled so easily that too when its needed urgently ) .
Then why some people looks like having more memory power than others. It’s because of their ability to recall the required information at required time within a flash.
If everyone has same memory, then can this so called memory power be acquired/improved …?
The answer is definitely yes. Anybody can improve their memory power by keep on stimulating your brain with stimulating activities like reading , solving puzzles, quizzes act. And that also answers the question why some people are born intelligent. Their brain is more stimulated during their child hood and growth as a result of which they have more memory power.
2. As for intelligent student not having to work / study ... well that’s a completely wrong notion.
They definitely need to work but probably not as hard as you because of their memory power. But still they have to work. Also another factor which helps them is they work smarter rather than harder.
Then what is working / studying smarter…?
Its just simple. Be attentive in classes, taking notes in an organized manner and revise the portion covered in the class (on that particular day ) in the evening on that day itself in the home. That makes all the difference between a smart student and ordinary students.
3. Now the answer to the billion dollar question …. How should ordinary students compete with the so called intelligent students.... ? .
Again the answer is simple they learn to work smarter and a little bit harder also. In other words they have to burn more mid night oil than those who are lucky to have born intelligence. They should remember that …” There is no short cut to success “.
Finally let us go little deeper into this discussion….” How to be super successful in life “
Everyone has born with some kind of a talent (You may not be good at one thing but excellent in some other thing ). You need to recognize it and nurture it.
Your " I will " is more important than your " IQ. " Rest assured, you can improve your intelligence, unless your definition of intelligence is your mental capacity on the day of birth, and nothing more, which is strictly hereditary. We are growing and adapting throughout life.
Behaviors are a culmination of hereditary and environment. Your behavior and preferences may determine what is your choice to nurture. So, yes you may be per-disposed towards math or science at a young age but if your family consists of artists, then that part of your brain will grow...may be not to enjoy art but it will learn about it. However, it won’t grow as much as a person who is pre-disposed to the arts from the womb.
It is always best to find your strengths. In other words, find what your are genetically inclined to do and nurture those strengths. If you go into painting and you are great at it people will think you are a genius. Intelligence is somewhat a matter of semantics. In other words, it means different things to different people. There are books written about the different kinds of intelligences. Here are a few other areas of intelligence : bodily; special; linguistic; and interpersonal. Those people whom you consider “ Super successful in their field “ are the people who know their strengths (worked hard to improve it ) and have chosen to pursue them and have the resources to do so.
So find your strength , pursue a goal which matches your strength, work hard and be success full.
